Influence on humidifier disinfectant on physical,chemical properties in soft contact Lenses

Abstract
Purpose : PHMG (polyhexamethylene guanidine) and PGH Oligo[2-(2-ethoxy)ethoxy ethyl guanidine chloride], the humidifier germicide ingredient is the material containing the guanidine which is used in a bactericide ricide or antiseptic. In this study, the changes of physical and chemical properties in soft contact lenses by using humidifier germicide were analyzed.

Methods : The materials of germicide, 0.25% PHMG and PGH were diluted with 2 liter of water. After hydration for 1 day, 3 days, 5 days, 7 days, 15 days and 30 days each, the changes of physical and chemical properties such as water content, refractive index, UV-Vis. transmissibility and pH value were measured.

Results : The refractive index of disposable soft contact lens decreased with lapse of soaking time. Also, the refractive index of daily-wear soft contact lens decreased from 1.445 to 1.441. The water content of two types increased from 55.62% to 69.47% and from 34.49% to 37.50% each. The measurement of UV-B transmittance with soaking time showed the increase of three percentage The value of pH increased from 8.0 to 8.4. Also, the physical and chemical properties of the lenses showed radical change within just one day.

Conclusions : It is judged that the PHMG and PGH used in the humidifier for sterilizing action will lead to change of the physical and chemical properties of soft contact lens.
